Welcome to the reincarnated GumBlasters (formerly www.nogum.com)! Don't you hate... - being stuck on an airplane (in a theater seat, in the check-out line, on the train -- take your pick) near some twit who insists on snapping, popping and squishing his/her obnoxious wad?
- standing in the check-out line at the grocery store and watching the checker, bagger, and manager all working open-mouthed wads?
- feeling like you are the only person on earth bothered by this rude and offensive habit?
You are not alone! This is the website for those who have had enough! Let's stop passively accepting these ill-mannered animals who inflict their rudeness on everyone and let the public know that gum chewing is gross -- and speak out! After a five year hiatus, GumBlasters is back online, as cranky as ever about the grand gross-out habit of chicle mastication. Check out our online store with some unique bumper stickers that will leave people tailgating you with no doubt about your attitude toward the Nasty Habit. There's a great selection of tee-shirts and sweatshirts, too. If you're tired of the bozos of the world snapping and squishing the noxious substance in your face, take a look around, then register your displeasure here by visiting the GumBlasters Forum and posting your thoughts.

Because it is a disgusting, uncivil, crude and unattractive habit, and most of those who are afflicted with it seem incapable of chewing with even a trace of courtesy and basic good manners. There are few things more revolting than standing near someone working an obnoxious wad, treating everone around them to the sight of the insides of their mouthes and the glistening gobs therein. GumBlasters.com is not here to agitate for laws to prohibit gum chewing. We are here to promote basic civility and courtesy, and to raise peoples' awareness of the effects gum chewing has on others. Every time I go to my local grocery store, half -- at least -- of the people working there -- including supervisory personnel -- are walking around chewing with their mouthes open. Now when I was very young, on of the earliest things my parents taught me was to chew silently, and with my mouth closed -- a very basic element of good manners. One would thing that an establishment that sells foodstuffs would have the sense to establish policies that prohibit their people from engaging in a practice that can make their customers want to upchuck. Another thing that baffles me is the number of otherwise attractive, well-groomed people walking around chewing a gob -- and doing so noisily and with their open mouthes displaying their contents for all to see. Why make the effort of wearing expensive clothing and putting on makeup if you are just going to make yourself look like a slob by sticking gum in your mouth and chewing it like a goober? The people who chew gum like this are very often otherwise very nice, courteous and intelligent people, and I suspect they might think twice about their method of gum chewing if they knew how offensive and unattractive it is to others. I think that part of the reason is a lack of awareness on their part, and that creating such a level of public awareness (while venting a bit and indulging in a little humor along the way) is what GumBlasters.com is all about. So thank you for visiting. Take a look around, and stop back often! In 2000, Mark Bakke wrote a wonderful essay on gum chewing and posted it on his site at http://www.bakkster.com/chewgum.htm (no longer maintained, unfortunately). Mark has kindly offered to allow me to reprint the article here, along with several interesting comments he received and his responses to them. Click here to read the article. |
